With no less than four editions of Q-BASE on its resume, the traditionally present Third Movement (TTM) will celebrate their five-year anniversary at the German festival this year. The Dutch Weeze veterans are sharing a bunker with the English Deathchant label, who will follow up on the Movement's alternative hardcore sound with a good dose of UK hardcore violence.
One might think that TTM, which has also been featured at Q-BASE with the Club r_AW concept, would have a hard time to provide the festival with an original line-up. Even so, the label ran by Promo & partners manages to come up with a bunch of unexpected and fresh names. The day is kicked off by Sequence & Ominous, two of the very few DJs that are known solely for their mixing skills, rather than production prowess. This time, they will focus their ever surprising choice of records upon music from the first years of the new millennium, the era of TTM’s rise to fame.
The Early duo from Northern Holland is relieved by an old friend from France: Dr. Macabre. With his characteristic, eerie sound, he will guide the crowd towards the day’s darkest hour. N-Vitral, performing live just like Macabre, rolls out his wayward, industrial music to crush the bunker to bits. Heavy kickdrums grilled in unruly noise and dipped in delicious distortion sauce, that is N-Vitral’s recipe. His performance at Q-BASE is only 2 weeks away from the release of his new album ‘I Audioassault U’, so expect a set full of never-heard-before music.
After this session of industrial violence, The Third Movement switches to a grand hardcore fest. The three artists who represent this characteristic sound, a completely unique vision of the way contemporary hardcore should sound, are Promo, D-Passion and The Wishmaster. Thus far, their planned ‘tegengeluid’-trilogy has spawned two records, by D-Passion and The Wishmaster. ‘Tegengeluid’ is a Dutch word that literally means ‘countersound’, but would normally be translated as ‘objection’ – the perfect way to describe the guys’ rebellious music. The release of the series’ third part, Promo – Concrete Combat, is planned right after Q-BASE. With all this new music, the visionary trio will turn their bunker into a true Third Movement-fest.
As soon as darkness has not only fallen musically, but also outside the bunker, Deathchant takes over from the Movement. Led by UK hardcore veteran Hellfish, they will apply military precision and rock-hard beats to assure complete destruction of the bunker. Their Black Ops team comprises the ‘Big 3’ of UK hardcore: Hellfish himself, The DJ Producer and Bryan Fury. The former, self-proclaimed ‘Field Marshal Maniac First Degree’, will utilize his borderline comical mix of sampled and remixed pop and hiphop, a lot of breaks and drums, and a rather high tempo to blow away the crowd.
The DJ Producer, Lieutenant-General of All Things Oldschool, joins in with a more serious, extremely varied sound, characterized by rolling kicks and dark atmospheres. As frontman of Rebelscum Records, he is a force to be reckoned with both as a DJ and production-wise. The team is completed by Bryan Fury, General of Starvation Protocol. He places further emphasis on breaks, combined with aggressive samples and spells of straight-on four to the floor banging. In short: a guarantee for a crowd going completely off.
Of course, these gentlemen will not stand alone in their effort to blow away the bunker. They bring reinforcements, among whom is DJ Skeeta. His style shares the rolling feel of DJ Producer’s, but is more minimalistic. DJ Tugie, who runs the Audio Damage label with Autopsy, also joins in with his meritable scratching skills.
Element:Destruction, the Dutch promoter and DJ, is another part of the English team’s backup troops. His experience as a resident at his own Smackdown events assures that he will once again live up to his name at Q-BASE. Finally, Hellfish & Bryan Fury return as the Axe Gabba Murda Mob, only to ensure no soul remains standing.
Deathchant itself recommends the following minimum protection for the violence described above:
- Ear protection
- Kevlar vest
- Steel toe-capped boots
- Shatter proof eye protection
- Bullet-proof pants
There is, however, no guarantee that this gear will allow you to survive the night completely unharmed. One thing, though, is for certain: whether you like revolutionary hardcore or subversive, banging beats, the TTM/Deathchant bunker is your place to be.
